Seeing Growth Through Guidance
Scott joined the programme with a simple desire: to make a difference while learning from a new perspective. What followed was a mentoring journey that challenged him as much as it challenged his mentee, Lamin.
How the Programme Worked
Scott, a VP of Customer Fulfilment and chartered engineer with extensive experience in operations, strategy, and transformation, came to the programme driven by a desire to contribute — and to gain a fresh perspective in return. From the outset, he found it well-structured yet flexible, with regular check-ins and clear frameworks that made it easy to support his mentee effectively, while allowing their conversations and goals to evolve naturally.
Mentoring Lamin
Mentoring Lamin became as much a journey for Scott as it was for his mentee. Observing Lamin navigate the realities of early career life — balancing competing demands and working out where work fits within the bigger picture — prompted genuine personal reflection for Scott on his own priorities and work-life balance.
Lamin's key breakthroughs stood out as particularly rewarding moments: realising that work is only one part of a full life, and learning how to manage competing demands without losing sight of what matters. Scott watched these shifts happen in real time.
The programme was a reminder that mentoring is a two-way street: while Lamin developed confidence, balance, and perspective, the mentor gained insight, reflection, and the satisfaction of contributing meaningfully to someone's growth.
What He Learned
The experience broadened Scott's understanding of the challenges faced by a different generation navigating the start of their careers. It reinforced the value of patience, empathy, and storytelling in guiding others.
Looking back, Scott highlighted three practices that he believes maximise the impact of mentoring: sharing personal experiences openly, collaborating with fellow mentors to exchange ideas, and being intentional about which challenges to tackle together with a mentee — rather than trying to address everything at once.
Hearing from other mentors gave me new ideas and perspectives. The learning environment created by the programme made the whole experience richer.
