Breaking down the barriers to ethnic minority leadership
Across the UK, individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds are significantly under-represented in senior leadership. This is not a pipeline problem — it is an access problem. Structural barriers, unconscious bias, limited networks, and lack of visible role models all contribute to a persistent gap between ethnic diversity in the wider workforce and at the leadership level.
The Aleto Foundation was founded specifically to address this gap. Born from the Powerlist — a celebration of the most influential UK leaders of African and Caribbean heritage — we have spent 15 years creating pathways into leadership for young people from ethnic minority backgrounds across the UK.
Through our programmes, we provide mentorship, professional exposure, skills development, and access to networks that are often out of reach. We believe that when diverse voices reach the top, entire organisations — and society itself — become stronger, more innovative, and more equitable.
